CONSULTATIONS IN SUSSEX WITH AN EXPERT PSYCHIATRIST

Many people struggle to find a specialist service that recognises the complex presentations of neurodivergence that may underlie mental health difficulties.

We offer comprehensive assessments of neurodevelopmental conditions – including Autism, Tics and Tourettes, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These often overlap.

Professor Hugo Critchley’s evidence-based and holistic approach to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care presents a confidential, effective and supportive option for many people whose needs fall outside what can be offered or accessed through mainstream services.

What Assessments do we offer?

  • Depression
  • Autism
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Tics and Tourette Syndrome
  • Obsessive Compulsive symptoms
  • Anxiety, mood disorder, and emotional instability
  • Assessments for reports including UKAD ADHD TUE applications
  • Interaction of mental health symptoms with physical health, including:
  • Hypermobility spectrum / Ehlers Danlos
  • Dysautonomia including PoTS
  • Sleep difficulties

What Does an Assessment Involve?

Before the first assessment, we will discuss with you by telephone or email your specific needs and expectations.

You will likely be asked to provide background information that may include past medical letters, information from your GP and information about your childhood e.g. from school reports.

We may also ask you to complete some questionnaires relating to your symptoms.  These will help provide a fuller picture of your condition and situation.

We will arrange an initial two hour face-to-face appointment with Professor Critchley

Sometimes we find it helpful to have someone who knows you well, such as a parent, present at the appointment to provide information about your childhood that can help with the assessment.  This will be discussed with you in advance.

In the main consultation appointment, senior psychiatrist, Professor Hugo Critchley will take the time to understand your current situation, psychological (and physical) symptoms, and past experiences. This may involve detailed questions to assess one or more particular diagnosis, but you will not be pressured to share information that makes you uncomfortable.

You may be asked about the following:

  • Thoughts, feelings, and emotions
  • Depression, anxiety
  • Other mental health symptoms
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Routines and repetitive behaviour
  • Physical health symptoms, such as pain and fatigue
  • Past health issues and treatments
  • Major life events
  • Finances, housing
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Relationship issues
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Educational experiences at school and beyond
  • Occupation, jobs and issues at work
  • Strengths and skills
  • Family, cultural and ethnic background

Assessment Report

A detailed medical report will be written and sent to you after the assessment. On some occasions, when evaluating neurodevelopmental conditions, Prof Critchley may ask your permission to contact someone of your choosing (e.g. a parent) to clarify in a telephone conversation some details about your background. The assessment report will suggest a potential plan for your support, care, or further treatment.

Follow up appointments will be offered according to your needs. These may include the prescription of medication (e.g. for ADHD or tics).
